So What Is Earth Day?
Earth Day is always held the same day every year, April 22nd. The reason is because this is the day when the very first one was held in 1970. Earth Day was founded by Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from the state of Wisconsin. He felt that there needed to be a national day of recognition that focused on the environment. He got his inspiration from witnessing the damage created by the 1969 massive oil spill that happened in Santa Barbara, CA.
The late 1960s and early 70s were all about political movements. Senator Nelson realized that he could use this to his advantage to bring people together to help fight air and water pollution. The original Earth Day events were announced as “National Teach-Ins On the Environment” to the national media, and the date of April 22 fell between spring break and final exams for college students, who were the main target audience.
The first Earth Day was a huge success. Over 20 million Americans participated in demonstrations that were held all across the country. The rally was a true coast-to-coast event. It even brought Republicans and Democrats together. By the end of the year in 1970, the Earth Day movement had a big impact in our government. The United States Environmental Protection Agency was formed and the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts were also passed.
